What is the Schlumberger Method?

The Schlumberger method is an electrode array particularly preferred in Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) studies. In this method, electrodes are placed symmetrically along a single line.

Array Structure In the Schlumberger array, the distance between the potential electrodes (M and N) is kept quite small relative to the distance between the current electrodes (A and B).

  • The center point remains fixed.
  • While M and N electrodes stay close to the center, A and B electrodes are gradually moved outward from the center.
  • As the current electrodes move further apart, the electrical current penetrates deeper into the ground.
